Project Reflection
From 1951 to 1955 the CBS Radio Network aired a series called this I believe. This program offered the opportunity for people to express their beliefs and core values to a large listening audience, by means of short essays that the author would read on air. The series was resurrected in 2005 by NPR and continued through 2009. Now schools from all around the country take part in the project by writing their own essays. This is what we did in humanities over the past couple of weeks. Each student was required to write an essay describing one of our core beliefs and make a recording of ourselves reading our essays aloud.
This project really challenged me because of its personal nature. I have always struggled with personal writing and this was no exception. It took me a great deal of time to come up with something that I really believed in. My method of overcoming this challenge, was focusing on the experiences that I believe have shaped me and then the values behind those experiences. Choosing the value of adventure allowed me to pick an interesting story from my past to serve as the narrative in my essay. Using a personal narrative really help me to improve my personal writing because it allowed me to write about a real event and the real emotions and sensations that accompanied it. This strategy really helped me to write more personal and sincere essay.
Although overall I did not enjoy my time working on this project, it did have its merits. I particularly appreciated using the program Audacity to edit my recording. The program was completely new to me and it was fun to experiment with the program and learn the basics of audio editing. The other beneficial aspect of this project was its focus on personal writing, which is one of my weakest areas within my academics. Personal writing is an essential skill that applies to college applications, job applications, and any other time it is necessary to prove your worthiness through your writing.
